Music has always been a big part of my life. My dad has been playing for almost 35 years and being around his music made me love piano. When I was little, I was fascinated at how his hands glided across the keys with grace. Hearing the beautiful music he created sparked an interest in my heart to learn.
Around the age of six, I started taking lessons. In order to become better, I spent one hour at home practicing. While playing piano, you're told to look at the sheet music and don't watch your hands. Trying to ignore where to place my fingers was a challenge. I knew I had to find a way to fix my tendency of looking down.
During my lessons, I had a "piggy bank". After each piece of music I played, I was able to add money to my piggy bank. Collecting money motivated me to focus on the sheet music (remember I was young at this time, I wanted money to buy endless amounts of candy). Striving to get more coins allowed me to learn to play correctly. At home, my dad would watch me practice and help with my mistakes.
I learned how to play piano through practice and setting a goal. Having my dad at my side as a mentor also helped me learn quickly. Learning how to play correctly wasn't easy, but now I can focus on the sheet music. I broke my tendency of looking down and now I can play liked my dad, with grace.
Musicians definitely need to learn how to play without looking. Their job is to connect with the audience. For them, it is important to look up and entertain the audience.
